Is your money enough?
At this time, the awareness about money has greatly increased because of the recession that seemed to have eaten into every part of the economy of the country. Our attention is beginning to shift to how to make more money and how to retain more. The emphasis is on MORE! I would not want to take our attention away from more, but I want us to be careful.
Some years back, a friend told me that a house was discovered in his hometown full of dollars. The money was stacked inside the ceiling and the walls of the house. Upon discovery, the whole building was almost destroyed as people were hustling to pack as many as they can pack. It was a breakthrough for many of the villagers who had a share in the loot which belonged to a former Inspector General of Police. My mind queried the reason for hiding money inside the ceiling of an abandoned house where rats must have eaten some of these notes. Could it be greed that would make a man who was already successful to do such a thing?
There are several other examples among the politicians and the question of my mind was answered by a simple statement- Money is never enough! This is a common statement among humans whether rich or poor. However, it is an influence of a demon called Mammon. “Not enough” is the language of everyone who has his finances under his control and so there is always an urge to get more and more irrespective of how much you have already.
This does not exist among the rich alone. In fact, it is more endemic amidst the poor which makes them to want to extort an extra 10 or 20 naira from others simply because their money is not enough. Many of us can relate with this. Just ask yourself- is my money enough? If it is not enough at whatever point you are now, it will never be enough at any point you get to.
As we all launch out to get more at this time, make sure it is not because your money is not enough. Be grateful for the little you have and God will bless the works of your hands.
